This is not a route of sea and wine. It's a route of forest, mist, and stone. Of four linked natural parks. Of understanding why people fled here when the city was plague and war — and why you'd still want to. One day, 245 km, four entirely different worlds without leaving the province. You do it on a motorcycle because only then can you read the change in temperature, smell, and light.
We leave Barcelona heading north. The city fades faster than you'd expect. At Vallgorguina we enter the Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor — tight curves between cork oaks and holm oaks, silence interrupted only by your engine. This was land of bandits and charcoal burners. The roads were designed to confuse. You can still feel it.
Everything changes as we enter Montseny, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The air is colder. The light filters green through beech and century-old chestnut. Kilometers of perfect curves through one of the most biodiverse forests in southern Europe. Mandatory stop at the Pantà de Santa Fe — black water reflecting the peaks of Matagalls and Les Agudes at 1,700 m. Up here, at 1,200 m, you understand why Montseny has always been considered a sacred mountain. Midday lunch with views of the reservoir. You breathe deeply and the city leaves your body.
We descend the north face of Montseny toward Sant Hilari Sacalm, capital of Les Guilleries — springs, water bottling plants, and ancient thermal tradition. Then we leave the main road entirely. Les Guilleries is land of wolves and of Serrallonga, the 17th-century bandit who became a legend. Narrow asphalt tracks above ravines, infinite green, no tour buses. We stop at the Mines d'Osor — antimony and iron galleries that swallowed men whole. You kill the engine. You hear the forest reclaiming its own.
We ride south. The landscape opens. We arrive at Caldes de Malavella — water boiling from the ground since the Romans ruled. We visit the Roman Baths, now a museum: mosaics 2,000 years old, still underfoot. Beside them, modernist spa architecture, indiano mansions, water as luxury. From antimony galleries to Roman thermal culture in 20 km. We return to Barcelona through the interior with the sun setting behind Montseny, four natural worlds still in your body.
On gear: The law requires only a helmet. At 1,200 m altitude in Montseny, temperatures drop sharply — a proper jacket is strongly recommended regardless of season. Our rental partner offers everything at competitive rates. Let us know when booking and we'll arrange it before departure.
